Mommy-ness

My daughter is amazing. She gobbled up her mushy cereal for dinner. She went for her first ride on the baby swings tonight, and she peed in her tiny little potty before her bath. She already tells me that she loves me with this sweet little gurgling sound she makes in the back of her throat after she breaks out her nose crinkling smile. It really doesn't take much for me. The way I feel when she does these things is one of the best feelings ever. Do I feel the same way when I see another tiny baby gobble up their mushy cereal for dinner? Not so much. I read in one of my many baby magazines that they have studied women while they look at pictures of babies smiling. Their physiological reactions were similar to that of taking recreational drugs... but only when looking at their own children.

It's an amazing bond, the mother daughter relationship. I've spent twenty six years on the receiving end. Now I'm ecstatic about being on the giving end. Or is it vice versa?...

  1. Oh, my goodness! What kind of recreational-drug reaction do you suppose I'm having when I read such words from my daughter while seeing the cutest picture ever of my granddaughter?! I'm a junkie for this stuff.

  3. I love that feeling so, so much. It's one of those impossible things - "Just trust me, it feels different when it's your own children." You can't explain it. You just have to live it. And I'm so glad you're blogging. You have the sweetest, most monumental thoughts - and you put them so well.

  4. Jacki's relationship with each of our children makes me jealous! Now you are making me jealous too! There is nothing like your own babies smile, unless it is the laughter of your grandchild, and the feeling of his little arms wrapped around your neck.

  6. And wait -- are you serious? She peed in a potty chair?! Wow. You guys going for a gold medal? 'Cause maybe you should. :)

  8. I was wondering about the potty chair too...you are amazing...I think about doing that with Titus, but then I think there is no way this works!

  9. Well, the potty chair is just for trying it out. I thought about doing the hard core infant potty training. I believe in it, strangely enough. I just don't really want to do it anymore. But she does pee in her little potty right before bathtime probably every other night or so. It just must be a natural time for her...I don't know.
